What is Nexplanon (etonogestrel)?

Nexplanon is a contraceptive implant that consists of a single, small, white to off-white, flexible rod that is inserted just under the skin on the inside of the upper arm. The implant is approximately 40 mm long and 2 mm wide (about the same size as a hairgrip or a matchstick).

Nexplanon is a progestogen-only form of contraception as it contains a small amount of the progestogen etonogestrel and no estrogen. A progestogen is a synthetic type of female sex hormone that helps control your normal menstrual cycle.

Nexplanon has to be inserted and removed by an appropriately trained healthcare professional and must be removed after 3 years of use. If you have been prescribed the Nexplanon contraceptive implant, you can sign up for a free email reminder service.

The Talk Choice website is a national campaign aimed at the general public that gives information on available methods of contraception.
