Are there any side effects of the Nexplanon (etonogestrel) implant?

Just like other medicines (including other types of hormonal contraception) the use of the Nexplanon contraceptive implant may be associated with some unwanted effects. Some of the most commonly reported side effects experienced by women who have used the Nexplanon contraceptive implant include:

  • Acne
  • Breast tenderness and pain
  • Headache
  • Irregular bleeding
  • Weight changes
  • Vaginal infection

It is important that you tell your doctor or family planning nurse if you develop any of these side effects or experience other reactions, even if you are not sure whether or not they may be related to the Nexplanon implant.

Please read the Nexplanon Patient Information Leaflet and talk to your doctor or family planning nurse for more information about the Nexplanon implant and its possible side effects.
