Acceptability of the Nexplanon implant

Many women find the Nexplanon implant to be a highly acceptable means of long-acting reversible contraception, particularly for its convenience and the fact that there is no user action for up to 3 years.32

Studies have shown that:

  • Almost 40% (n=282) of women choose to use the Nexplanon implant again after the previous contraceptive implant expires.22
  • Over two-thirds (79%, n=75) of women would recommend using the Nexplanon implant to a friend.34
  • Continuation rates with the Nexplanon implant at 1, 2, and 3 years are high.9, 11, 22

The major reason that women ask for the contraceptive implant to be removed early is the development of an altered pattern of menstrual bleeding.12, 18, 22, 34 Continuation rates may be improved by pre-insertion counselling to manage patient expectations about the side effects of progestogen-only contraception.1
