Who can use the Nexplanon implant?
The Nexplanon implant is suitable for use by a wide range of women and can aid family planning throughout a woman’s reproductive life.1, 15, 16 The contraceptive implant may be used to:
- Postpone a first pregnancy until a later date.
- ‘Space’ pregnancies in women who have already had a child.
- Provide long-term, reversible contraception when the desired family size is reached.
As a progestogen-only method of contraception, the Nexplanon implant may be particularly useful in women who are ineligible (e.g. women who are breastfeeding) or unwilling to use estrogen-based contraceptive methods, such as the combined oral contraceptive, contraceptive patch or contraceptive vaginal ring.15, 16
Unlike some other forms of modern contraception, Nexplanon gives women freedom from worrying about contraception and does not interrupt sexual spontaneity. It must be remembered, however, that the implant cannot protect against sexually transmitted diseases and appropriate precautions should be taken.
Please refer to the Nexplanon Summary of Product Characteristics and the UK Medical Eligibility for Contraceptive Use for further information on patient suitability and potential contraindications to the use of Nexplanon.
