Managing expectations of the Nexplanon implant
The Nexplanon implant is a highly effective method of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) that is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.2,3 As with all forms of contraception, women should be made fully aware of all the benefits and risks associated with the contraceptive implant’s use before insertion.2
Key reasons why women choose the Nexplanon implant over other forms of contraception are:
- Ease of use and convenience.1, 32, 34
- Reliable, reversible contraception effective for up to 3 years.1, 2, 6, 32, 34
- Do not like, or have admitted suboptimal adherence to, other forms of contraception.19, 34
- Side effects or contraindication to other types of contraception.15, 32
Conversely, reasons why women choose to have Nexplanon removed include:
- Changes in menstrual bleeding patterns.12, 19, 22, 32, 34
- Side effects commonly caused by hormonal contraception.12, 19, 34
- Contraception no longer wanted.12
Pre-insertion counselling is recommended,2, 11 and can help to manage patients’ expectations of the contraceptive implant’s use and ensure that it is the right means of contraception for them at that point in their reproductive lives.
