How to use the Nexplanon implant
Nexplanon is suitable for use in a variety of women.1, 15, 16 and it is quick and simple for a trained healthcare professional to insert Nexplanon and to remove Nexplanon.5 Before using the contraceptive implant, however, it is strongly recommended that you arrange training (or are supervised by a more experienced colleague) and always refer to the Nexplanon Summary of Product Characteristics.1
During the pre-insertion consultation process, women should be informed that they can attain up to 3 years of contraceptive protection by using Nexplanon and that they are free to have the implant removed at any time. It is important to manage patients’ expectations with regards to the possible bleeding changes and side effects1 and to note that, with correct insertion, the risk of complications is very small. It is also important to exclude pregnancy before the use of Nexplanon.1
Women who have been prescribed Nexplanon can sign up for an e-mail reminder service in the My Nexplanon section of this website. This free service is intended to help them to remember when Nexplanon was inserted and when it is time to arrange an appointment to have the contraceptive implant removed.
