Removing the Nexplanon implant

To ensure the quick and uncomplicated removal of Nexplanon, the correct insertion procedure must have been followed.1,5 If the implant is not palpable then X-ray, ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging may be necessary to locate the contraceptive implant before removal is attempted.

After removal of the Nexplanon implant, a new contraceptive implant may immediately be used if so desired by the user. If replacing the Nexplanon implant, the usual insertion procedure can be performed in the same arm and often in the same incision from which the previous Nexplanon implant was removed. If the patient is not continuing with Nexplanon, another suitable contraceptive method should be recommended.1

Please note that the Nexplanon implant should only be removed by an appropriately trained healthcare professional. For a detailed description of how to insert and remove Nexplanon please refer to the Nexplanon Summary of Product Characteristics.1
